Melbourne animal shelter worker allegedly tried to sell human finger that was eaten by dog

A Melbourne woman allegedly tried to sell a human toe on the black market after it was bitten off by a dog.

Joanna Kathlyn Kinman, 47, of Lilydale in Melbourne’s north-east, was charged last month with offensive conduct in relation to human remains after Victoria Police received a report in February.

Police say Ms Kinman was volunteering at an animal shelter, which cannot be named for legal reasons, when a dog vomited up a toe and other bone fragments.

Ms Kinsman is accused of placing the toe and other remains in a jar with the intention of selling them on the internet, the Herald Sun reports.

The severed finger belonged to the owner of the dog, which died of natural causes.

The dog is known to have bitten off its owner’s finger before being found and taken to a shelter. The dog’s owner also cannot be named for legal reasons.

Ms Kinsman is reported to have appeared at Ringwood Magistrates Court on Tuesday. She has not yet indicated whether she intends to fight the charges.

Improper conduct involving human remains is punishable by up to two years in prison.

“Detectives from the Yarra Ranges Criminal Investigation Unit have charged a woman who allegedly stole human remains in the Yarra Ranges area in February 2024,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

The 47-year-old was arrested on February 20 in connection with the incident.

A Lilydale woman has been charged with offensive conduct in relation to human remains on August 16.

“She will appear before Ringwood District Court on November 7, 2024.”

Two days after the court hearing, Ms. Kinsman put a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine up for sale on Facebook.

“Almost new, only used for 18 hours!” she wrote, attaching several photos of the item.

In recent months, Ms Kinsman has listed a number of items for sale on social media, including an aquarium, a “silent guitar” and 20 James Bond collectible cars.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Ms Kinsman for comment.
