South Brunswick soccer snaps 5-game winning streak in close rivalry with North

NORTH BRUNSWICK – Do you believe?

That was the question coach Ibrahim Halsey asked the South Brunswick American football players. He asked it over and over again, between shouts and screams.

Some may have had questions for the Vikings after Halsey and staff took over an inexperienced team this spring.

Well, they certainly believed.

South Brunswick continued its hot start with a 30-21 victory over North Brunswick in Thursday’s rivalry game. The Vikings captured the Mike Elko Memorial Trophy and snapped the Raiders’ five-game winning streak in the series. North Brunswick holds an overall advantage of 28-20-1.

Tied 21-21 in the fourth quarter, South Brunswick scored a safety after a fumbled pass into the end zone with 9:31 left. North Brunswick’s Zach Cipot recovered the fumble, thrilling the home crowd.

South Brunswick’s Dason Boateng picked up the ball on the left side of the field and ran 45 yards to give his team a 30-21 lead.

Earlier, he snatched the ball and ran nearly 90 yards to the 3-yard line, setting up quarterback Daniel Duffie for a 3-yard touchdown run.

It was a game full of twists and turns.

North Brunswick’s Nyeem Houston returned the opening kickoff 75 yards down the left side to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead 11 seconds into the game. It was the second straight season that North Brunswick had scored on the opening kickoff of a game.M
