DoorDash driver saves Brevard County crash victim with CPR

WEST MELBOURNE, Florida. – A Good Samaritan could have saved the life of a man hit by a motorcycle.

On Sunday at the intersection of Highway 192 and Dairy Road, police said 23-year-old Rebekah Tate fled the scene, leaving an injured motorcyclist at the intersection while she drove away, dragging the motorcycle still attached to her car.

Before first responders arrived, Billy Leblanc told News 6 reporter James Sparvero he managed to get the man breathing again after performing chest compressions.

“He was lying there, face down,” Leblanc recalled. “When I got closer, I noticed a helmet lying on the road, and there was trash everywhere. No motorcycle, no car, I didn’t see anything, but I could tell it was clearly a hit-and-run.”

Leblanc said he was delivering packages for DoorDash when he happened to stumble upon the scene and rushed to help.

“I would hope that anyone who came across something like this would do the same thing, and I think most people would,” he said. “It’s just sad that someone would leave them there, motionless, and not help them.”

According to police, Tate tried to hide in a Hyundai car dealership at the intersection, where she also tried to get her motorcycle out of the car before someone came to take her away.

She appeared in court at the Brevard County Jail on Thursday on charges of causing a motor vehicle accident and leaving the scene of an accident.

Judge Kelly Ingram set Tate’s bail at $17,500.

“She was obviously scared, but still, call 911 at least as a bare minimum,” Leblanc said. “I’m just glad I was there at the right time to help him.”

Leblanc said he would tell the victim in the hospital to be strong.

“As I told him at the scene, he wasn’t conscious, but I just told him to hang in there, the ambulance was on the way, and to be strong,” he said. “He’s fighting, and from what I hear, he’s doing well, or doing better.”
