Authorities are investigating after a number of electric scooters were set on fire in Hobart’s CBD overnight.

Police investigations are ongoing after a group of electric scooters were set on fire overnight on a street in Hobart’s CBD.

Tasmanian firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the Beams house on the corner of Liverpool and Harrington streets just after 11pm on Thursday.

Photos shared exclusively with Pulse show a group of people gathered around the scooters seconds before authorities arrived, laughing as the devices burst into flames.

At least seven Beam electric scooters were damaged in the incident.

The attack comes after the City of Hobart yesterday gave Beam 24 hours to show why its e-scooter licence should not be revoked.

The council’s decision is a response to accusations of underestimating the number of active scooters in other cities and calls from councillors to remove purple electric scooters from the streets of the capital.

“We have sent Beam a notice of cause and they will have until close of business on Friday, September 6, to respond,” said Hobart City CEO Michael Stretton.

Stretton says if Beam fails to fulfill his contractual obligations and provides a satisfactory response, the city “will not hesitate to revoke his license.”
