The fairgrounds are hosting the 53rd annual Frontier Days. The five-day event offers a variety of attractions, including the opportunity for local students to receive college scholarships.

“I’m just grateful for this opportunity,” said Sydney Monahan, a senior at Olivet High School.

Frontier Days is also a time when some local students receive financial aid for their future. Two high school seniors received $1,500 scholarships each.

“Every little bit counts. I hope I get a lot more scholarships, but I’m just so grateful for this one,” said Sydney Monahan, a senior at Olivet High School.

Sydney Monahan, a senior at Olivet High School, plans to attend Michigan State in the fall to major in agribusiness management. To participate, students had to write an essay and answer questions about community involvement at Frontier Days.

“I started writing the essay over the summer, and it made me reflect on myself and say, ‘Who do I want to be?’” said Paul Devito, a senior at Olivet High School.

Fellow Olivet Senior Paul Devito was the second winner of the $1,500 scholarship. He hasn’t decided whether he’ll go to Michigan or Michigan State in the fall. He plans to major in environmental science and is proud that his hard work has paid off.

“I put a lot of work into this essay to try to reflect who I am. It’s hard to stand up in front of people you know, but you have to stay true to yourself,” said Paul Devito, a senior at Olivet High School.
