Davey Street is now better for bus passengers and cyclists

Jeremy Rockliff, Prime Minister

The Tasmanian Government is building safer, more efficient roads across our great state as part of our Strong Tasmania Future Plan 2030.

The final stage of the Macquarie and Davey Streets Bus Network Upgrade Project has been completed, making travelling on Davey Street safer and more convenient for bus passengers and cyclists.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the project was a continuation of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s drive to provide safer and more reliable transport options between Hobart’s central business district and the growing southern suburbs under the Southern Projects program.

“People waiting for buses at stops 2 and 3 on Davey Street now have better protection thanks to two larger, more modern bus shelters,” the Prime Minister said.

“Cyclists on Davey Street can safely separate themselves from traffic using a new, dedicated cycle lane on the approach section between Sandy Bay Road and Barrack Street.

The work, which began in late July, followed the April implementation of an extended peak hour lane on Macquarie Street.

“Work has also recently started on the Transit Lane Connector, creating an additional lane at the bottom of the Southern Outlet, between Davey and Macquarie Streets.

“All of these improvements will deliver immediate benefits and will also prepare the ground for the construction of the T3 transit lane on Southern Outlet from Olinda Grove to Macquarie Street.

“This public transport lane, together with the two completed Kingborough Park & Ride sites and additional bus routes, will provide an attractive alternative to private car use and improve daily access to and from Hobart’s central business district,” he said.
