The story of week three of North Carolina high school football

Cape Fear (1-0) at Terry Sanford (1-1), 7 p.m — The Bulldogs will debut their new video scoreboard at Bill Yeager Stadium after going 1-1 on the road to open the season. And if they can score, they’ll be the first to do so this season against Cape Fear, which had an off week after beating Pine Forest 44-0 in Week 1. Bulldogs quarterback Jacob Moore has 11 touchdowns this season (three passing, eight rushing). He’ll be looked to be stopped by a seasoned defense led by Will Wicklin.

West Carteret (0-1) at E.E. Smith (1-1), 7 p.m — David Hickmond IV had a 107-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Bulls’ win over Byrd last week, in which freshman quarterback Quitin Nelson rushed for 129 yards. The Patriots, members of the 3A Coastal Conference, lost 41-23 to North Brunswick in Week 1 before heading into the off week.

Fairmont (0-2) at Westover (0-2), 7:00 p.m. — Nasir Wells threw for 187 yards and a TD at Smithfield-Selma last week, and the Wolverines are looking for their fourth straight 3-0 start. They have beaten Fairmont by an average of 46-7 over the past three seasons.

Hoke County (0-2) at Douglas Byrd (1-1), 7:30 p.m — The Eagles are looking to regain momentum after snapping an 11-game losing streak in Week 1 behind 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Justin Richardson. Hoke is led by dual-threat quarterback Brandon Saunders, who averaged 132 yards passing and 44.5 yards rushing in the Bucks’ losses to Jack Britt and South View.

Durham Riverside (1-1) at South View (1-1), 7:30 p.m — The Tigers welcome a DC 6 Conference opponent they defeated 43-0 in Week 3 last season in Durham. Tyriq Clarida leads the United 8 Conference with 253 passing yards, and South View quarterback Rashad Dockery is averaging 82.5 rushing yards per game.

Pine Forest (0-2) at Gray’s Creek (2-0), 7:30 p.m — The Bears showed off a devastating ground game with a trio of juniors who combined for 645 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns in a 2-0 start. Zeek Reed’s 38 carries ranked 14th in the state across all classifications and associations. His six touchdowns rank 16th. Alphonso Myers’ 262 rushing yards rank sixth in the state in 4A, while Reed’s 220 ranks 11th. Dequan Anthony is also a part of the offense, averaging 8.2 yards per carry. The Trojans started clicking on offense late in last week’s 49-20 loss to Seventy-First, so they’ll look to build on that. This is the first time these teams have played since the 2020-21 season, when Pine Forest went 9-7.
