Matthew Mott joins Sydney Sixers as assistant coach after leaving England

Matthew Mott has joined the Sydney Sixers in the BBL on a three-year contract as assistant coach after leaving his position as head coach of the England men’s national team.

Mott, who coached Australia Women for eight years before moving to England, will join Greg Shipperd at the Sixers, replacing Cameron White who was appointed Melbourne Renegades head coach earlier this year.

“I am delighted to be rejoining the Sydney Sixers,” said Mott. “I began my coaching career in Sydney many years ago, so it brings back both great memories and a sense of comfort that I am looking forward to.

“The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, for whom I have a huge amount of respect, really appealed to me.”

Mott’s stint as England’s international coach began promisingly after the team won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, which saw them lift two world white-ball trophies, but it ended after they crashed out of the semi-finals of the tournament earlier this year following a poor performance in the 2023 ODIs.

Mott began his coaching career with the New South Wales men’s team in 2007. His return to the state system will see him reunited with Rachael Haynes, who was one of the key players for the Australian team, whom he coached with great success.

“We couldn’t be more pleased that Motty has committed to the club for the next three years,” Sixers general manager Haynes said. “When the opportunity arises to hire a coach of Motty’s caliber, it’s a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic asset he will be to our group of players.

“Needless to say, his coaching CV speaks for itself. He has an incredible track record across the world and has proven he knows what it takes to build and maintain a winning culture.

“Our club is in safe hands under the leadership of Greg Shipperd and Charlotte Edwards in our women’s programme and we are delighted to add Motty’s experience to this group to take us forward.”

In last weekend’s BBL draft, the Sixers kept James Vince when the Renegades tried to sign him, and then sprang a surprise by selecting Yorkshire legspinner Jafer Chohan as their final pick, before securing West Indies left-arm spinner Akeala Hosein ahead of the draft.
