The Australian Olympic athlete admitted that Raygun is struggling due to global criticism of her breakdancing performance.

Two-time gold medalist in kayaking Jessica Fox has revealed that criticism of last week’s performance had a “devastating” effect on Rachael “Raygun” Gunn.

Her comments came after Australia’s Olympic athletes were welcomed back to home soil on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was among family and friends waiting in the Qantas hangar at Sydney Airport.

Gunn, however, was not among the smiling team, as she chose to stay in Europe and travel with her husband, fellow breakdancer Samuel Free.

Fox, who won two gold medals, said the hate Gunn received after her “interpretive” breakdancing performance had a serious impact on her.

“I’ve spoken to her. It’s devastating for her,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“To see the cost… she’s human and what she’s been through in the last week is huge. She definitely feels it.

“There’s a human behind all of this, and people can be so horrible so quickly. She doesn’t deserve that.”

The Australian team did what they could to support Gunn in the face of the outpouring of hate, with clips of teammates dancing with the breakdancer ahead of the Games’ closing ceremony circulating online.

“It was so special for us to be able to support her during the closing ceremony and show our appreciation to her as a valued member of our team,” Fox said.

Several other Australian Olympians have openly expressed their support for Gunn, including swimmer Zac Stubblety-Cook.

He called the criticism “disappointing” and said seeing Gunn smile during the ceremony was “bloody awesome.”

Gunn has become the subject of numerous memes and videos online mocking her performance at the Olympics.

Australian Olympic Committee chief Matt Carroll told the outlet that Gunn had been offered support in Paris, which would continue upon her return to Australia.

However, the negativity was also reflected in accusations that she did not deserve to be on the Olympic team and deliberately lost the competition in the name of studies.

“Someone is first and someone is last. But everyone tries their best and is extremely dedicated. I think they should be respected, no matter what,” he said.
