Connecticut Republican Wins Nomination to Face Longtime Democratic Congressman

Republican congressional candidate Michael Goldstein won the primary in Connecticut’s 4th congressional district and now faces a tough fight against longtime Democratic congressman Jim Himes in November.

The primary election featured two Republican candidates: physician Michael Goldstein and former CFO Bob MacGuffie. MacGuffie, a former local Tea Party leader during the Obama administration, won the GOP endorsement at the county convention in May, defeating Goldstein.

The state’s 4th congressional district is just outside New York City and includes cities such as Bridgeport, Fairfield and Greenwich.

The pair didn’t differ dramatically on policy during the primary season, agreeing on the need to address issues like inflation, the crisis at the southern border and the state’s high utility bills, as previously reported by CT Mirror . The two differed on the style and manner in which they intended to challenge Himes in the general election, the source said.

“Nobody has made a concerted effort to recall Jim Himes,” MacGuffie told NBC Connecticut, arguing that Republicans have not been aggressive in their efforts to remove the longtime Democratic congressional incumbent.

“I’m trying to motivate Republicans not to give up,” MacGuffie added in comments to the CT Mirror. He said he wants Republicans to try to “appeal to the unaffiliated (voters) who are looking for people who are going to take a strong stand on their behalf. They’re not softies from the middle. They’re people of principle.”

As recently as 2007, Republicans held three of Connecticut’s five House of Representatives seats. But since Himes’ successful 2008 campaign, there has been no Republican representing the Constitution State in Congress, the AP reported.

Incumbent Democrat Himes has served eight terms in Congress since taking office in 2009, setting up a tough fight for the Republican ticket in November. Himes, who faces no primary challenger this cycle, won nearly 60% of the vote in the 2022 election when he ran against Republican Jayme Stevenson, who received nearly 40%.
