Aroostook man charged in infant’s death jailed after bail expires

HOULTON, Maine — A Fort Fairfield man charged with murder in the death of his infant son was sent to jail Monday after his bail was revoked.

Stanley Hazell, 24, appeared in Aroostook County Superior Court for a hearing scheduled to revoke his bond, but Superior Court Judge Stephen Nelson found he was no longer eligible for bond.

The hearing was scheduled after Deputy Attorney General Leann Robbin filed a motion to revoke Hazell’s bond. There was no discussion during the brief proceeding about Robbin’s reasons for wanting to revoke his bond. Because Hazell’s bond had been terminated, the revocation hearing was adjourned and has not been rescheduled.

As part of Hazell’s bail conditions, the court ordered him to post $15,000 cash or $50,000 secured by property of that value. The bond was terminated by the bond holder, and without cash, he cannot remain free, according to Maine law. Nelson ordered Hazell taken to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

The April 8, 2022, death of seven-month-old Jackson Hazell was ruled a homicide by the Maine medical examiner.

A lengthy investigation led to Hazell’s arrest in Caribou on Nov. 13, 2023, according to Maine State Police.

Nelson testified in court during Hazell’s bail hearing in February that he was charged with negligently and criminally causing the death of Jackson Hazell.

If convicted, Hazell faces up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

No trial date has been set for Hazell.
