Somers recovers after horrific accident

By Thomas Miles

Conor Somers has recovered from his horrific crash in Townsville and will return to the Porsche Sprint Challenge in Tasmania this weekend.

Somers missed the recent round of Queensland Raceway due to his Sonic Motor Racing Services Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (991 GEN II) being repaired following an accident in Townsville.

During qualifying on the Supercars street circuit, Somers hit the barrier at the fast 90-degree Turn 10.

Since then, the Sonic Motor Racing Services team has been hard at work restoring the car, and the rebuild involved a complete body rebuild that replaced around 90 percent of the vehicle’s components.

Although Somers has raced an orange and black car in the past, he will now race in an all-white livery following a hasty rebuild.

Somers said getting back on track has been a painstaking process.

“It’s been a lot of work getting the car ready but it’s back on its way to Tasmania now and I can’t wait to get back in it,” Somers said.

“I’ve been working on the car with the team almost every day since he came back from Townsville to get it ready.

“It’s been a huge team effort to get this back, and I can’t thank the Sonic team enough, or the generous support of so many friends and fans, for helping us get back on track.

“Last year I raced in the Formula Ford at Symmons Plains. It will be a completely different experience, but at least I know which way the route will go.

This weekend the Tasmania SuperSprint will also feature the Porsche Sprint Challenge and Supercars.
