This The Olympic Games in Paris have only just come to an end – but thoughts are already turning to the next big event, which will take place in the United States in 2028.

This year, new sports and events were introduced in France, including, for the first time ever, a breakdancing competition.

Kayak cross made its debut at the Olympic Games, where athletes competed against each other directly, not just against the clock.

On the race track, a repechage round was used for the first time in all short and middle distance races, with the exception of the 100-metre sprint.

But how many new events will survive and what additions will take place when we do it all again in Los Angeles in 2028?

With one event already canceled, another in doubt, and six new sports revealed for the next Games, let’s take a look at what’s changing in Los Angeles.

Which events will be canceled from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?

Breaking made its debut at the Olympic Games in Paris and it is safe to say that its inclusion caused quite a stir.

Some fans were particularly unhappy, with Australian breakdancer Raygun slamming the IOC and critics after her performance was given zero points and went viral.

Cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy defended the “fantastic” event but Olympic bosses revealed the brakes had been called off for the 2028 Los Angeles Games before they had even finished.

It was a temporary hit and there will be no breakthrough at the next Olympics.

Which events are at risk?

It has not yet been confirmed that boxing will be held in Los Angeles due to problems with the organization that governs the sport at the Olympics.

The competition was held in Paris under the chairmanship of the IOC after the International Olympic Committee stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of its recognition over corruption allegations involving governance, finances, judging and ethics.

The IOC has so far left boxing out of its 2028 programme and has warned that if a new governing body cannot be found, the sport will not be included in the programme.

IOC President Thomas Bach said a decision on including boxing must be made in 2025. Only time will tell if boxing will have a presence in the U.S.

Six sports that were not present in Paris will be included in Los Angeles – and two of them will be making their Olympic debuts: flag football and squash.

Flag football:Flag football is a variation of American football in which players must remove the flag or flag strip from the hands of the person holding the ball to complete the play, rather than knocking it to the ground.

According to the IOC, each team consists of five players and the match takes place on a 50-yard field without the participation of offensive linemen.

Stifle:Squash is a popular racket game that can be played in both singles and doubles.

Players compete on a court surrounded by four walls, attempting to hit the ball into the playable surfaces of the walls.

The aim of the game is to hit the ball in such a way as to prevent your opponent from making a correct return.

Both squash and flag football will be deemed “optional” sports, meaning they may not return to the Brisbane Games in 2032.

Which sports will return to the Olympic programme next time?

Four new sports will return to the 2032 Olympic Games in Los Angeles:

Baseball:There were no baseball events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but it’s no surprise that it will return to the US Games.

Baseball was an optional sport until 1992 when it became permanent. It was then removed after 2008 before being added back as optional for Tokyo 2020.

His “once in a while” status is expected to end before the next Olympics, and he is also expected to be present at the Brisbane Games in 2032.

Handball:Softball was present at every Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008, but was not played at the Games in London in 2012 and Rio in 2016.

It returned to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, but was absent again from the Paris Olympics in 2024. It will return as an optional sport at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Lacrosse:Lacrosse will be featured in the Los Angeles Olympics for the first time in 120 years. The event was last held in 1908.

It will be an official medal discipline in which six-person teams will compete in tournaments.

Cricket:Cricket has only been played once before, in Paris in 1900. After 128 years, the competition will once again be held in Los Angeles.

Which optional sports will become permanent?

Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were “optional” disciplines at the Paris Olympics.

However, according to the IOC announcement, from 2028 they will be moved to a permanent event.
